Beatrix Potter

A few days ago I watched for the first time the film Miss Potter (2006) and for the first time I heard about Beatrix Potter, the British writer and illustrator born on July 28, 1866 in Kensington, London.

Beatrix was raised with her brother Bertram for their goberness in her home. Since she was little was stimulated by them to read and draw, showing from a very early age her great talent for drawing and creativity to invent stories. Most of the time she was isolated from other children and used to spend her holidays in Scotland with her family in Lake District, where she had many pets and where they used to enjoy the outdoors and nature. There she used to draw everything she saw.

When she was 32 years she published her first book, the most successful and known to all, "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" which was followed by a collection of 23 books, all illustrated by herself. So great was the success that soon became a financially independent woman. Her love life was not so lucky. In 1905 became engaged secretly with her publisher, who died of pneumonia a month later he asked her to marry him. Her parents were against this wedding and this caused a breach between Beatrix and them.

Beatrix was finally married at 47 years old with a lawyer who was an old friend of hers. They had no children and she finally died on December 22, 1943. Beyond having loved this film, for its tenderness and its magic, I was fascinated by this character unknown to me until recently, for her great creativity and talent for drawing. Her drawings, though simple, they convey a tenderness and have "something" that makes them special.
